What is Beta-Carotene?
Beta-Carotene is a nutrient easily identified as the orange pigment found in vegetables like carrots. The human body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin A is responsible for healthy skin and vision.
Beta-Carotene can be found in wholesome plant foods as well as in multivitamins..
However, It is NOT recommended to consume Beta-Carotene supplements..
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of beta-carotene supplementation (in isolated form) on cancer risk. It is found to be “associated with INCREASED RISK of not only lung cancers but also gastric cancer”!
Back to basics..
Beta-Carotene is a good antioxidant ONLY when consumed in wholesome form. Not only does synthetic beta-carotene increases cancer risk, it causes potential issue of overdosage (i.e. Hypervitaminosis A) and interact with medication used to lower cholesterol. When consumed in wholesome form, other nutrients present in the wholesome plant will work hand-in-hand with the body as to when to stop the conversion of beta-carotene into vitamin A. This is the underlying reason why we should opt for wholesome superfood instead of synthetic supplements!
